What can you expect from teds market?
Welcome to the feed! This is the teds market newsletter to let you know what is happening and what new delicious items we have at the market! There have been a number of questions about teds market and I wanted to take this first letter to tell you a little about the market and my vision for the market.
why "teds market”:
While the idea of teds market came out of a philosophy of serving better food and offering great customer service, the actual name came from Ted Hench, my grandfather. He is ultimately the reason that teds market is here. The son of a German immigrant, Ted followed his father's footsteps as a butcher. He soon saw the potential for a better way to serve customers. In 1952, Ted co-founded Chief Supermarkets with his brother and a local grocer. That first store excited the community, and quickly changed the landscape of grocery shopping in a quiet Ohio town. Now, some sixty years later, it is again time to try something new. This time to move forward, we want to look back at the small, neighborhood markets of the past, before supercenters, robot-powered distribution centers, and mass marketed food. We want to build a place where passionate food lovers can create delicious meals that cater to our customers' tastes, and where customers feel welcome to ask questions about how to transform simple ingredients into great dishes. It is about simple, great food, and serving our neighbors. It is not far from where Ted started in 1952.
I love food! I love eating food, making food, and talking about food. At its basic levels, food sustains us with its vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and calories. But food is so much more. It is sensory - with textures and aromas, taste and visual appeal. It is memories - that great meal, that special item only Grandma could make. Food is simple, but our relationship to food is not.
At teds market, we will be preparing a lot of food from scratch in our kitchen. Our goal is to make dishes that are simple and familiar, but to also find ways to improve on the classics. Often this improvement will simply come from fresh ingredients and solid techniques. Sometimes it will come from adding that one small twist of flavor that makes you say, "wow! what is that?" We also hope to change our menu regularly - add new dishes, and remove ones that are going out of season.
At teds market, the shopping experience will be unique. We are a small location, so we want to be a convenient place to pick up some staple items that you need on a regular basis. Our team has been hired based on knowledge of food and great customer service, so our goal is to be a resource for you to find better ingredients and cook better food. However, if you are too busy to cook every night, then our kitchen will also have prepared meals for you to grab on your way home as well!
We want to be your neighborhood grocery, so we aim to have a little selection of a lot of items. Our grocery area is small, but proud and will have everything from flour to spices and cereal to pasta. The market is also the pantry for our kitchen, so many of the items we carry are going to be ingredients that we use regularly. Many of our products will be from small companies that make great products without a lot of added stabilizers and odd colors. We will also offer a small selection of dairy products, fresh meat, tasty cheeses, and seasonal produce. Our bakery will feature freshly baked breads daily, as well as a coffee bar (and tea), plus offer some products from outside bakers that also make great little treats!
cafe & wine bar:
During the day, the market level will have seating inside for customers that want to enjoy our coffee and baked goods, one of our fresh made sandwiches, or even a quick dinner. Seasonally, we will extend the seating outside onto our main patio.
There is also another side to teds market. That is teds wine bar - a casual place to get a glass of wine or a bottle of craft beer. It is also another creative outlet for the kitchen, where we will offer small plates that again use the ingredients from the market, but in smaller, more intimate portions. This area will be for those 21 and older, but we will also offer some beer and wine by the glass on the market level.
Many of you want to know when all of this is happening. Soon! We had planned to be open already, but construction is what it is - especially on a renovation like this. We are in the process of finishing construction and getting all of our necessary permits. Our initial walk throughs have been positive, and now we are working on punch list items. Most of our equipment is set, and the kitchen just needs the okay to fire up the ovens. We have a number of staff hired, and they are itching to get into the market to clean and train. And after that, we load in the food and throw open the doors!
Thanks for your patience - we will make sure your wait is worthwhile!
Looking forward to serving you,
Brian | founder and grandson of ted
